DJ not-I Bio

Born in California in 1970, I grew up with music in the form of my father's extensive record collection. Aside from his favorites, bluegrass and folk, I was also exposed to the likes of the Beatles, Dylan and Aretha Franklin from an early age. My grandfather had been a jazz musician so classic American popular song figured into the mix too. I started DJing as a kid, when I began fooling around with my dad's stereo, recording fake radio shows and doing overdubs with the left and right channels of his cassette deck.

We moved to Seattle in 1977. During my classical phase (my first LP purchase was Beethoven's Fifth), I discovered electronic music in the form of a Moog version of Ravel's Bolero, inspiring me to buy my first keyboard. My tastes in the 80s included the electronic sounds of Kraftwerk, Y.M.O. and old-school hip-hop, as well as new wave and the new romantics. Some of my fondest high school memories are of staging a concert with my own band (I played synth), playing double bass in the jazz band, and seeing Einstürzende Neubauten perform live on the Seattle waterfront in 1986.

I moved to Vienna in 1989, and during the 90s I rediscovered guitar and got into grunge and progressive rock (Primus, Nirvana, King Crimson), checked out the avant-garde sounds of modern classical (Bartok, Ligeti, Pärt) and explored world music such as Indonesian gamelan, traditional Arabic, and Japanese shakuhachi. I stayed true to electronica with Bristol trip-hop, drum and bass, and experimentalists like Squarepusher and Aphex Twin. I also played bass and sang in a couple of bands.

I've always listened to a broad range of music and with time (and age) my appreciation of jazz, soul, old-school funk, and acoustic/electronic music from Africa, Asia and the Middle East has continued to grow. My love for quality hip-hop never died.

After years of collecting records, making mixtapes and DJing at parties or for friends at home, I finally got serious in 2002 and did my first paid dates at Fluc on Praterstern. Other former and current venues include Café Latte, LoVienna Lounge, Schikaneder and Strandbar Hermann. My styles range from Global Groove and World Funk to Full-spectrum Hip-Hop with a specialty in off-the-wall remixes and mash-ups.

Aside from being a mobile DJ, I play bass, keyboards and guitar and produce my own mash-up remixes at my home studio near Mexikoplatz. I also rap and produce for the recently-formed progressive hip-hop formation Three To A Match.
